Starting Saturday January 1st, up until a few days after that, we ALL will be inundated with people’s New Years Resolutions to start going to the gym, stop cheating on their wife/husband and stop masturbating with only the left hand before their richard starts to bend like a goalie stick. These people never achieve any substantive LONG TERM change, they just pump themselves up so they feel good – up until Jan. 11th and then they are back to their regularly-scheduled Bullsh*t.
Now when I make my New Years Resolution I take into account that the change of the year is monumental in its symbolism, but ultimately meaningless in the grand scheme of human behaviour. Having to put a new calendar on your wall as of 12:01 AM on January 1st is NOT going to make you bigger, better, faster, stronger, smarter and more determined – IF you were NONE of those things on December 31st at 11:59 PM. I know my strengths, my weaknesses and what is truly in my own heart, therefore instead of making plans to completely change, I only have made one Resolution for the last 20 years: I will work hard enough to be BLESSED with new problems.
One of the many constants in all human life is the fact that we will always have PROBLEMS. No matter how much we reach our goals or fail at them, we will always have tough issues to work through.
But another constant of life is CHANGE, and with new issues will come new problems. I believe if you are working genuinely hard in the direction of your dreams then the problems you will be BLESSED with will be indicative of one very important fact: You did NOT remain stagnant over the course of the year.
